Helen Yancey Paints with Painter..

Helen Yancey's presentation on painting and photography was a big hit with all the attendees at the statewide event on June 22nd at the Forsgate. She demonstrated the process of using Photoshop CS4 and Corel Painter 11 in unison to create either water color or oil "paintings" from photographs. What a valuable offering to clients and what a great asset to your business! Do you have to be a portrait or landscape artist to produce these images?  No...but I would say it certainly would be a tremendous advantage.  Ms. Yancey uses Burell (http://www.burrellcolourimaging.com) to produce her prints, which she sells--only framed-- for as much as $11,000. By the way, Burrell's web site is a very interesting site to visit and study.

Another Interesting Photography Exhibit...

Through July 12, 2009, you can see photographs by Camilo Jose Vergara (left) in a show called: Harlem, 1970-2009 at the New York Historical Society (170 Central Park West, NYC). Since he came from Chile to the US in the mid 60's, Vergara has been "haunted" by American cities.  The people and places of Harlem are the subject of this show.

Often, when one looks at photos or art work very different from their own, he/she can gain some new perspectives.  For me, it even works with dance. After working all day and night on a shoot yesterday, I went to a performance by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater today. One thing that struck me was the use of diagonal lines in much of the choreography. How to bring those strong diagonals to my wedding photography will be something I think about on my next shoot.
Have you seen any good art shows lately? What was the
connection to your photography?

Nancy

Photography Exhibit in NYC

June is an especially very busy month for us all--between work and personal family events it seems like there aren't enough hours in the day! But...

Try and find time this summer for what looks like a great photography exhibit at The Museum of the City of New York from June 10-September 13 called: Dutch Seen: New York Rediscovered. Great place to take out of town guests to see this exhibition that marks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Dutch in Manhattan

The exhibit features the works of contemporary Dutch photographers and should be inspiring and provide a few moments of relaxation in our busy lives! Talk about great lighting!

For more information, see the web site:  http://www.mcny.org/exhibitions

Getting Started with a Planning Meeting...

On June 1st, the new officers gathered at the studio of President David Derex in Rochelle Park to plan the year's meeting schedule. We brainstormed on what we can do to benefit our members and our organization.

We are looking forward to serving you and helping the PPANJ North Chapter grow and have its best year yet! We encourage the participation of all of  our members in helping us make this a year of learning and building new relationships.

We welcome your ideas and suggestions to help improve the meetings, the speakers, membership and attendance.

What's on your mind?? Drop us a note via the blog comments area.

PS. This is Mario's  last post for the blog. He says, " It has been a privilege to start this blog and share some ideas and inform our members what's new. I hope in the future all of our members can benefit from this informative media."

Nancy Katz, our 3rd VP, is now in charged of the blog administration.

About Our May Meeting ...

For the for people who did not get a chance to attend the May meeting, we had Joe Brady as a speaker showing the new products for Pocket Wizard. It was very educational and interesting. The program was a success; we never had so many people attending one of our regular meetings.
The attendance of this program is due to the combined effort by Unique University and PPANJ North Chapter.
We have six new members and many more prospective members who attended this meeting.

Thanks... until next time.

JOE BRADY

Joe Brady is the Field Marketing Manager at the MAC Group in Elmsford NY, including X-Rite Color Systems, EIZO Monitors and Sekonic Meters. An award winning photographer and recipient of both the Fuji Masterpiece Award and PPA Photographic Craftsman Degree, Joe has been teaching digital imaging and Photoshop since 1992.

Program 1. Color Workflow for Photographers
Get Prints from your Lab that match what you see on your display!
Tired of getting prints back from your lab or off your inkjet printer that don’t match what you saw on your screen? Then you really need to learn how learn how to easy it can be to set up your computer and monitor to keep this from happening. We’ll show how to soft-proof in Photoshop and apply correction to images before sending them to be printed. While were at it, we’ll take a quick look at some of the great new tools in Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2 to give our images the finished look we all want.
Stop wasting time and money and learn how to get great prints the first time!

Program 2. Light Metering & Wireless Photography
Get perfect exposure every time with handheld meters!
Using the meter in your camera to determine correct exposure is a hit-or-miss activity. Using a handheld light and flash meter will ensure perfect exposure every time and raise the quality level of your photography. We’ll discuss why and how to use a light meter with ambient light and flash photography as well as using flash outdoors as fill light.
Following the use of meters, we’ll show how to control your camera and lights wirelessly so that you don’t have to be behind the camera to get great photographs. This technique will benefit all who photograph children and pets, as these subjects can be much more relaxed when you can interact with them without a camera in the way.
