Anthony Vazquez, Edgy and Energetic...May 2010 North Meeting

Photo by Nancy Katz at Unique, Fairfield, NJ

Anthony Vazques, an edgy and unique photographer with a bent on celebrities (did Jonas wedding), shared stories with PPANJ members of how he built his business over the past six years, and were he plans to take it this year and beyond. He revealed that one approach that's worked for him has been connecting with high-end wedding planners who've lead him to his high end clients. Vazquez is based in NYC-lives in Queens-- and travels internationally to meet his clients' needs.

He represents Graphi Albums as a speaker and uses only Graphi metallic, large format albums for his discerning clients. He makes use of social media-blogs, FB, Twitter- and is working on expanding his client group online who will regularly promote him and his work via FB, twitter and other social media. He begins that process with providing each bride an Animoto slideshow ready to sahre on FB. What a great idea!

May is National Photo Month...

So is it just another marketing ploy or is there a marketing opportunity in it for you??? There are many web sites like about.com, amazon.com, etc. that are filled with ideas for month of May promotions.

Be creative and send your clients a nice "Thank You" in honor of the month, post May photos in your studio and/or online, donate your services for an afternoon to a non profit org and write about it on your web site, blog, etc.

You can take a look on my Biz FB page to see what I'm promoting--Photo of the Day for the last week of May.

Also, I'm serving a mentor to a Hackensack High School student who's interested in studying photography.

Share your ideas with us all!

State-Wide with David Derex on Lighting Revealing...

Today's well-attended workshop with David Derex at Unique University on Glamour Photography and Lighting provided attendees a full day of close up observation of a seasoned photographer in action. Derex reviewed many of the basics and challenged attendees to think out of the box along with him as he made the most of lighting, backgrounds, and the models. His primary goal was to "teach almost nothing". He went on to explain that just the tiniest difference in a model's expression, placement of a hand or arm, adjustment of camera angle or position of lighting can make a huge difference in the photo outcome. Changing "almost nothing" can turn an ordinary image into an artistic photograph. These photos (taken by Nancy Katz) tell the story of the day. Jim Roselli, a master of Lightroom, managed the images as they appeared real time on the screen.

Ovation Dedicated to the Arts Online and on TV...

Anyone familiar with the Ovation cable/satellite TV channel? It's dedicated to the arts, including photography, and I hear the programming is great. Not available in North Jersey (yet!) but worth spending some time on the web site.

Let us know what you think! I see a program coming up about photographer Eve Arnold that you can watch online. Late night activity after all the shooting and design is done!!

From the web site:
Eve Arnold in Retrospect, a look at the life and work of the acclaimed Magnum photographer, is playing now on Ovation On Demand. Part of Framed week. Also available and presented in HD is the Ovation original Close Up: Portraits.
