Another member exhibits this summer/fall

NJ Affiliate Board Member and 3rd vice president Nancy Katz, will be exhibiting three works at the Gilbert Stuart Gallery in Saunderstown, RI.

Remember the portraitist who painted the unfinished version of George Washington (see any dollar bill in your pocket)?? Well, his ancestral home is the site of a lovely museum/gallery.

Two of Nancy's works depict scenes in Wickford, RI. "I love Rhode Island and the town of Wickford. It's an honor to be exhibiting at the Gilbert Stuart Gallery. The opening is August 7th and the show runs through the fall; all sales will benefit the museum. Come and visit!" (Above: Three Sisters of Wickford by Nancy Katz ©)

Member Flint Gennari exhibits in Paris, France...

North Jersey Affiliate member Flint Gennari (and blog follower) is back from Paris , France where his black and white photo essay shot in 1974 was included in France's hottest art exhibit, "BORN IN THE STREETS: GRAFFITI" The display is at the Foundation-Cartier pour l'art contemporain! He is hanging in good company along side the artists Jean-Michel Bastisant and Keith Haring! Flint's work consisted of a larger than life size wall enlargement mural and eight (8) 16x20s with treatments by JonathanPenney.com. The show is up until Dec 1, 2009 so plan to visit Paris; it's worth the trip!!

How did Flint get his photos into a Parisian art show?

Let's ask him and see what he says!
"My photography first got national attention in High School when in 1975 I entered the Scholastic Photography contest (and won!); the next year I studied at International Center of Photography and was part of a group show there in the museum. And then nothing happened until 1997 when I was discoved by Hugo Martinez and given the second show in his new Chelsea Gallery! Since then I have been committing as much time as I can to being out there in the fine art world and it seems to have paid off!"

What other members are exhibiting this summer/fall? Let us know!

Who was this sailor?? Model release could have helped!

This iconic image was taken by photographer great Alfred Eisenstaedt in Times Square on VJ Day, August 15, 1945. Numbers of people claim to be the sailor and nurse (???) in the image. Since Eisenstaedt did not identify the people-even if it were required, how could that have been possible given the frenzy of this news event!! The controversy over who's who in the photo continues even today more than 60 years later!!

Recently, I was in Rhode Island, and I read in the newspaper that the city of Bristol's Fourth of July parade included two dignitaries--- the "original" sailor in the photo and the "nurse" he grabbed in his enthusiasm (who really was a dental hygienist). The former sailor's now-wife can be seen in the original photo over his right shoulder smiling. Not a day to fuss over one's fiance passionately kissing an unknown woman, I guess!

There's plenty to read about this image and the people who claim to be the actual kissers Eisenstaedt photographed on that
day of celebration and frenzy.

Reminds us that a model release (in our everyday photographic lives) is really important.

Bottom line--always have your model release forms ready and nearby. You can download a version on the PPANJ web site!
