Triangle of Light, Profiles, Backdrops and more...

Here are a couple of shots from Monday's workshop at Forsgate Country Club with Rick Ferro--that's Rick standing on the chair surrounded by very interested attendees. He demonstrated how to create the triangle of light on the model's face, enhance the backdrop by adding folds to give texture and dimension, loosen the hands so they are feminine and romantic, and to always be posing for the profile and 2/3 face (one ear and 1/4 inch of skin on the other side of face).

Rick often goes to art museums just to look at the positioning of hands in paintings. Also good to look at artists' handling of portraits--2/3 and profiles.

These shots were taken by member Pat Auriemma.

Rick Ferro Shares Ideas on Lighting, Image making, Workflow and more...

Rick shared many ideas over the course of the day. He definitely stressed only shooting 2/3's (one ear showing and 1/4 inch of face on non-ear side) and profiles with all clients but especially at weddings to add drama and to create images that are pleasing to the eye (and pocketbook!!).

He uses "spider lights", a light meter on his belt, a sense of humor and years of experience to capture and please his clients.

Rick talked a lot about the importance of hands, their placement, romance and open finger position. He has no hesitation in shaking out a client's wrist to loosen them up, then gently position their hand and fingers.

Deliberately overexposing images is a technique he uses a lot with seniors--the results are more than cool.

Rick created the Disney wedding program and still shoots there regularly. For more on Rick, including instructions on overexposure, see http://www.rickferro.com/index.html

When Photography Meets Jazz..

When first-class jazz vocalist Lauren Hooker of Teaneck wanted sophisticated photography for her latest album Life of the Music, she turned to our own David Derex. "David's experience as a glamour photographer really appealed to me", says Lauren. "I wanted a very New York look to this album and that's what David offered."

The renowned Rufus Reid, jazz bassist and composer (also of Teaneck!!) wrote in the liner notes: "Lauren’s voice is mature, rich, robust, and full of emotion that only experience can bring. She surrounds herself with seasoned world-class instrumentalists who make the collaboration spectacular'".

Grounds for Sculpture...Shootout this winter??

When was the last time you visited Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ? It's a fabulous place to visit and refresh the artistic/creative soul. I spent 6 hours walking there yesterday and just couldn't leave. Many new sculptures since my last visit, abundant foliage and surprises every place you look.

Any chapter have a shootout there in the past? Would be a great winter activity with the beautiful water features, pervasive color and monumental sculptures.

Nancy Katz Exhibits Photos from Cuba....

CUBA PHOTOS ON DISPLAY..9/26/10 @ The General Store, Teaneck, NJ

Says North Jersey PPANJ Board Member Nancy Katz, "3 Artists, 3 Works, 3 Weeks is the title of the show I'm in beginning tomorrow. In 2006, I visited Cuba for the second time and using a small digital camera, I captured the dignity of a young mother--deaf from birth-who was a Deaf Olympics broad jumper with her baby; 3 young boys on their way home from school who peppered me w/ questions re NYC's crime and noise, and a theater director creating a mask for a children's company that travels the world. What people--what a privilege!"

Please come to the opening tomorrow 4-6 PM if you are free or stop in the store when you are in Teaneck over the next 3 weeks.
